Dick Schmalz, Chief Development Officer
Dick Schmalz began in the commercial real estate business in Birmingham, Alabama in 1972, engaging primarily in the location and development of single-user commercial sites for clients in Alabama and Mississippi. Other development involvement included residential subdivisions, office buildings and commercial buildings primarily in the Birmingham, Alabama market. In 1984, Dick became the director of retail development for a local, full-service real estate firm where he supervised the development of six shopping centers totaling 560,920 square feet. In 1991, he began doing business as RGS Properties, Inc. and has successfully completed fee development of five retail centers totaling 362,646 square feet.
As an Owner/Developer, Dick has completed, or has under construction/redevelopment, 16 retail projects totaling 816,308 square feet and four Self Storage projects totaling 212,100 square feet. In addition to managing his own projects, in 2001 he began “third party” representation, focusing on property management and asset redevelopment/enhancement. During his career, he has completed site acquisitions for over 125 free-standing restaurants in Alabama and Mississippi.
He graduated from Auburn University in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Dick resides in Birmingham with his wife, Jane, a leading residential real estate broker. In his free time he enjoys spending time with Jane, exercising and serving on several civic and charitable committees.
